I don't remember where I originally heard it, but I like the sentiment that the problem with common sense is that it's common but not necessarily good.

Hanging with my conservative parent. The conversation immediately started with Faux News and fwd:fwd:fwd: “Conservative Bullshit” like “Biden let in 11 million illegals” and shit like that, or less than 1% of illegals work in agriculture because they’re simultaneously stealing our health care and taking all the jobs higschoolers used to do. Then of course we’re at the airport and a PoC walks by who apparently fit whatever stereotype my parent thought constituted being of “Hottentot” heritage - and so was Michelle Obama in their opinion. Want to know if Hottentot is racist? You bet your ass it is, go check it out.

Anyway, long way ‘round to the point… Liberals say race should not be a factor in how society or we deal with a person or people other than to make sure they are treated equally and not overlooked. Conservatives also say race shouldn’t be a factor, it’s common sense, but we should make no effort at equal treatment and of someone is overlooked it’s their fault. “Common sense” these days has devolved to the lowest effort, knee jerk, most convenient possible response.

Common sense, eh? Do you have any idea how stupid the average person is?

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 hours ago

It's not the average person's stupidity you need to worry about.

It's the exceptionally stupid that give average idiots a bad rap. We're all average idiots every once in a while. The exceptionally stupid are the reason they put warning labels on chainsaws. The exceptionally stupid will ruin your entire day without ever interacting with you.

The average idiot might miss his exit, even shoot across a lane at the last second to make it. The exceptionally stupid will careen across 4 lanes of traffic at the last second and cause a 3 car pile up behind him, realize it was the wrong exit anyway and get back on the interstate going the wrong direction.

We are lucky when the wake of destruction following the exceptionally stupid catches up to them, if only because it slows them down long enough for us all to move on.

who knew that knowing you should clean the filter on your dryer made you racist.

I guess I'm a Nazi because I know you should clean the filters on your dishwasher, clothes washer, and HVAC every three months.

🤔 something about this sentiment doesn't add up now that I'm thinking about it.

I think the word they forgot is prejudice, not "common sense".

[–] mandatstory@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Broooo they did this to me so hard they literally copied the plot of Killers of Flower Moon complete with the native genocide and deliberate fraud. They did this year. They're still up to it hundeds of year later their bars are all made up even when they say explicitly not to repeat historical disparities of unequal protection they don't care if the racism is accomplished. The losing presidential candidate too. Sometimes things work out.

Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen - Albert Einstein

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I try hard to avoid "common sense". It's a way of saying, "If you don't agree, you're not sensible." Also, it's intentionally vague.

"We need common sense gun laws!"

"Like what exactly"

"..."

A revolver in the hand of every youngin you say?

[–] wischi@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also because it's clearly a misnomer. "common sense" is ironically not that common 🙃

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago

Common sense is a catch-all for whatever the speaker thinks is obvious. There's really no such thing

[–] Ging@anarchist.nexus 15 points 1 day ago (7 children)

I know this is just thebad.website comic, but I'm genuinely curious (and an idiot) to know what the connection is with generally racist-inclined folk love for saying that everything is common sense. What makes them think in this way?

It's the backbone of their every argument--no matter what it is, if I ask, "Why do you think x, y, or z is the case?"
It is without a doubt their instant reply, 'It's just commonsense!'

[–] MrSmiley@lemmy.zip 35 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Thought-terminating cliché, it’s used to dismiss arguments and shut down critical thinking. It’s a tactic associated with cult language.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 day ago

Because there isn't a real reason besides idiocy and hate, if they try to rationalize it, it falls apart, they have to face or give away that they're just hateful idiots. Saying it's "common sense" is an easy scapegoat to tidy up the truth, even if it's just for the benefit of their cognitive dissonance.

[–] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

It's a way to pretend their opinion is reasonable without having to justify it.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

in addition to the reasons (rationalizations) other commenters have covered, the reason (casuality) that they reuse this particular phrase so much is because it's commonly used in the media they consume. from limbaugh to rogan it's always been a staple.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

They think that way because that's as far as their thoughts go. They do not have a deeper reason. They're just judgemental morons that jump to conclusions to make themselves feel better.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sheeesh, and ya all wonder why no one listens to the left.

If you know shit about topic, you can only skim the surface. That's common sense. More police = less crime. More military = less risk of being attacked. More goods = smaller prices. That's common sense.

What it doesn't account for is, for example, too much police = more corruption, too much military = expansionist ideas, too many goods = oversaturation and sharp drop in said goods. Because that requires deeper knowledge. Yes, not much deeper, but you need to know these things are in fact factors, and that the problem is more complex than what's seen at a glance.

Edit: Forgot to answer why it's overused by racists etc. If you know black do most crime out of all, it's common sense to want them pacified. If you know drugs are bad and mexicans are known for cartels, it makes sense to not want mexicans which can be smugglers. It all falls apart as soon as you read on it or do anything, but what these people have most of is willful ignorance.

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

The "common sense" answer is generally broad and vague. It purposefully avoids nuance and reality. "If I want to build a garage on my property, why does the government need to be involved?" That person doesn't think of the drug dealer doing that to cook meth right next door and possibly blow up the block or the idiot that doesn't understand how to build a structure and it collapses in the first stiff wind.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

"common sense" positions are usually ones people haven't thought much about or reasoned themselves into.
