Top Trump official Stephen Miller's recent declaration that anyone who "preaches hate for America" will face deportation has ignited alarm online, with critics warning the statement disregards First Amendment protections.

Social media users and legal analysts raised immediate concerns, pointing out that expressing dissent or criticism of the government is protected under the First Amendment. Some worried the administration was veering into authoritarian territory.

The backlash has reignited broader debates over the limits of free speech, especially as civil liberties fall under scrutiny. While immigration enforcement remains a core theme of President Donald Trump's platform, critics are increasingly questioning whether rhetoric like Miller's is a precursor to more aggressive suppression of dissent.

Disagreeing with the dear leader will also be the same as preaching hate for America

Not clapping enthusiastic enough will also be the same as preaching hate for America

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

What does "hate for america" even mean? Does "I think mcdonalds fries are garbage" count? or "republicans are whiny little maggots"?

[–] thepenismightier@lemm.ee 3 points 4 hours ago

Skip the first and head right for the second I see.

[–] Cocopanda@futurology.today 2 points 4 hours ago

If the feds show up to collect me for voicing my opinion. There will be no questions asked. You come through that door. Some of you are not going home.

Trump once said that this guy, Kapo Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller, told him that he'd like to see America's population reduced from the current 335 million down to 100 million.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Surely you guys can take out Stephen Miller before he takes out 225 million of you?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

He's essentially daring us to use the 2nd Amendment, which is exactly what they want. Then they can declare Martial Law, and suspend the Mid-term elections.

They cant allow the 2026 Mid-Term to happen. Its shaping up to be a bloodbath for MAGA, and if they lose either chamber, the Dems will control investigative committees with subpoena and arrest power. So they are looking for an excuse to suspend elections for the first time in our history.

So they will be trying to goad us into violence through their words and actions, and eventually they will incite violence at the protests, which will be nearly daily by next summer. They have to time it carefully, and suspend elections close enough to election day that the courts can't react in time. That means next summer will be really ugly.

This is just the start.

[–] bstix 1 points 53 minutes ago (1 children)

What stops them suspending the mid-term elections anyway?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 1 points 28 minutes ago* (last edited 26 minutes ago)

America has NEVER suspended an election, even during the Civil War. Just declaring them suspended would be far too alarming for even many MAGA Morons. They'll want an excuse, a justification, to keep as many of their stupidest followers on board for as long as possible.

Thats how it's done. They didn't send a bunch of innocent brown people to El Salvador, they sent "violent gang members," even though at least 80% had no criminal record. They need to keep plausible deniability for as long as possible, to keep things from getting too hot and boiling over.

"Worries users" - is the USA an operating system now?

Is AI writing these posts? The statement makes sense in context in the full post, but the headline absolutely does not - leads me to believe yes, AI slop.

Whats that joke Reagan cracked back in the 80s about Russian Soviets not allowed to criticise their government?

Yea, huh. Wonder what happened to that.

[–] void_turtle@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Really hate the milktoast way these articles are written. "critics warning" "ignited alarm online" "backlash has ignited debate" ffs just say the Trump admin announced the end of free speech. That is literally what happened.

Some worried the administration was veering into authoritarian territory.

FFS WE'VE BEEN THERE THIS ISN'T VEERING THIS IS FOLLOWING A STRAIGHT LINE ALONG THE PATH WE'VE ALREADY BEEN ON FUCK

[–] ngdev@lemm.ee 7 points 12 hours ago

milktoast is a pretty milquetoast breakfast, though i will admit it actually pairs well with a milk steak boiled hard

[–] Zacryon@feddit.org 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I don't hate America. America is a continent. It would be really silly to hate an entire continent.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

Was not expecting the purposefully obtuse European response in this thread.

What are the "users" in this context?

That goes against the first amendment, which I think makes it anti-american. Can Stephen Miller start by deporting himself?

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 66 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

they're no longer following the Constitution, in case anyone has noticed ...

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 21 points 19 hours ago

They never were. Unless they added things that helped them or a cohort at a given time. cf: prohibition, its repeal, etc.

They are going to milk the extrajudicial rendition until there is an actual outbreak of violence to try and stop it.

Then Trump will send those people involved into a gulag, too.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

Agreed the purpose is to cause people to act and then move in to crush them. All the while playing the victim. Of course that play doesn't always work.

[–] MisterCurtis@lemmy.world 35 points 18 hours ago (5 children)

Trump isn't America, the government isn't America, fuck them. The people are America.

[–] FelixMortane@lemmy.ca 17 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Unless the people do something about, Trump and the government are exactly America. If no one stops it and just complies, then it is endorsement by default.

I love America. I swore to defend it against all enemies. I do not love what it is doing or who the government defines as enemies.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 16 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

When will you recognize that the government is behaving as if citizens are the enemy and itself is actually doing the same things enemies do..

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

That's pretty much what they said.

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 9 points 19 hours ago

I love who the government defines as enemies. I don't love that the government defines them as enemies.

[–] Eddbopkins@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (3 children)

i love the USA and everything the constitution stands for. i don't agree with how this administration is running the government in some respects.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

"What constitution?" - current government

[–] Waldowal@lemmy.world 13 points 12 hours ago

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 4 points 13 hours ago

Sir, please step this way. Your flight to El Salvador leaves from gate 88.

[–] Foni@lemm.ee 7 points 14 hours ago

I wish I could say I'm surprised.

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 17 points 19 hours ago

I hate America. Come at me bro.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 17 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

But he's doing it right now??? Ohh he's conflating the current administration with America even though all their values are in complete contradiction to everything this country is supposed to stand for. Got it.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 13 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

So let's say that SCOTUS rules that this policy infringes on the first amendment. Then they deport another person. Who's to stop doing it?

This is the same bogus and weaponizable logic that legitimate criticism of Israel's genocide = 'antisemitism' is. If you want to call legitimate criticism of the illegal and unethical actions of this POTUS administration 'hate for America', the notion that deportations (of US-born people) are going to ramp up shortly just became very real for me

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

Stephen Miller is the one preaching hate for America, the weird little twerp.

I'm pretty sure Stephen Miller is just undead Goebbels resurrected in a skin suit. Not as smart, but the instincts are intact.
