Lemmy is populated by far left Americans who were banned from Reddit for extremism. Strict ideological conformity is required or youโ€™ll get actual death threats. Donโ€™t go there unless you want violent communist revolution and hate discussing interesting ideas.

It's not my fault a lot of like-minded people also thought "Fuck Reddit". If they want more liberal or conservative people on Lemmy they're welcome as long as they follow the rules. Problem is that liberal or conservative people don't really mind the stuff happening on Reddit, so why would they?

[โ€“] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 54 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's not like right wingers have never fucked off and built their own "free speech" social media sites, with blackjack, and hookers.

Oh wait they do it all the fucking time. They're just mad we figured out we can play their game too.

They're also mad it makes it obvious that there are more of us than there are of them, since they get filtered into their own little defederated silos on Lemmy. They hate reality's well-known liberal bias.

[โ€“] Rhaedas@fedia.io 18 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I always thought I was liberal. Why am I here? Maybe the labels have shifted around and I've held on to the same ideas?

I just find it weird when people group liberal and conservative in the same bucket. Labels are about as dangerous as parties, they muddy the discussion.

[โ€“] Telorand@reddthat.com 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"Liberal" is not a useful word, imo. It means different things to different people. Hexbear users define it in the sense of neoliberalism, a historically right position. To many it means "progressive." To others, it means "somewhere on the left, and I don't care to put myself into a particular box."

If we'd quit shitting on people who call themselves "liberal," we might actually have a more cohesive coalition, rather than rejecting anyone for the tiniest perceived infraction, real or imagined.

[โ€“] rikudou@lemmings.world 11 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Liberal, to me, is the opposite of authoritarian. No idea what other people consider it to be, but IMO it's entirely disconnected from the left/right spectrum. You can have authoritarian left, right or center, same way with liberal.

[โ€“] jerkface@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Like in, "liberal democracy." But consider what "the opposite of authoritarian" means in the context of financial policies. The predictable movements of money are punishing to those who don't own capital in a self-perpetuating vicious cycle that ends with a few wealthy people and millions of people suffering poverty. A lack of regulation of finances results in total authority of capital. Neoliberalism seeks to reduce the authority of the state while increasing the authority of capital.

I think it's connected to unregulated capitalism in the eyes of its opponents here.

[โ€“] MBech 11 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I think the problem with US politics is that liberal is by party design, grouped with the socialists too. Here in northern Europe, the liberal parties are usually considered our right to far-right parties, while conservatives are a bit more centrist and often without any influence.

As a liberal myself I find conservatives think weโ€™re communists and progressives think weโ€™re fascists.

[โ€“] obvs@lemmy.world 91 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I haven't been banned from Reddit.

I want Lemmy to succeed because I want to interact more with people who are not from the U.S., and I don't want to use platforms from the people who were sitting behind him on inauguration day.

Since Elon feels that he can interfere in Reddit and since Reddit seems open to letting that happen, that's a good sign to me that I should limit my use of Reddit and should use alternatives instead. Lemmy seems to be the most Reddit-like of those alternative platforms, so here I am.

Far left extremists banned for their extremist views such as

  • Encouraging punching Nazis/fascists
  • Believing Palestinians deserve to live
  • Discussing Super Mario Bros.
  • Upvoting
[โ€“] snekerpimp@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Donโ€™t forget talking about which Linux distribution is the best.

[โ€“] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Literally Stalin!

[โ€“] whaleross@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

I have been banned from subreddits for making fun of nazis, including banter with somebody that self identified as a national socialist. The extremism is beyond acceptable. Bring the clutching pearls.

[โ€“] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's my favorite part of it all.

Explain what Far-Left means?

Does it mean woke/DEI/Luigi/new phase that makes people uncomfortable?

[โ€“] Fizz@lemmy.nz 6 points 4 days ago

Far left is communists, socialists and anarchists.

I'd take a platform of far leftists over far rightists any day. At least far leftists care about people.

[โ€“] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

Far left extremists also disagree with my intolerant far right extremist beliefs ...... that's censorship!

Ahh yes letโ€™s discuss fringe radical far left views like โ€˜letโ€™s not kill all the poor peopleโ€™ and โ€˜the state has a duty to protect its citizenryโ€™ yes, dangerously radical.

[โ€“] taladar@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

And radical economic ideas like "buy stuff from companies in your own country" or "don't buy stuff from companies in a country that is in the process of severing trade ties with your country".

[โ€“] casmael@lemm.ee 8 points 4 days ago

Wow thatโ€™s so radical how can you believe such fringe far left talking points

[โ€“] lmuel@sopuli.xyz 53 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Iโ€™m:

  • Not American
  • Not far-left (certainly heaps far away from โ€œrightโ€ tho)
  • Not banned from Reddit

Guess Iโ€™m not here, the more ya know

[โ€“] Lumidaub@feddit.org 18 points 4 days ago

We can be not here together.

[โ€“] Anti_Weeb_Penguin@lemmy.world 37 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I may be far left, but i'm sure i'm not American!

[โ€“] taladar@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 days ago (3 children)

What about those of us who are just average leftists in other countries but far left by American standards?

As a Dane myself, whenever I see someone claiming to be Danish with takes like this, I feel like investigating, and what a curious account indeed. The account is a little over 5 weeks old, yet they've posted so incredibly much I doubt that's their first account. They wrote in Danish a total of 6 times and it doesn't look machine translated, so I believe they're from Denmark, but I also found a post stating they "moved to Denmark", not sure where from though, but they post all over the place, like /r/ukpolitics, /r/norway, /r/newzealand, /r/auckland, /r/australia, /r/jordanpeterson, /r/conservative and /r/republican to mention parts of the spectrum.
Interesting person indeed, clearly right wing, but why would they move to Denmark of all places?

[โ€“] troed@fedia.io 23 points 4 days ago

... so, Russian troll factory account

[โ€“] huppakee@lemm.ee 10 points 4 days ago

Lemmy is populated by far left Americans who were banned from Reddit for extremism

considering you can get banned from reddit for being trans or using a vpn because you care about privacy that's not really the point they think they're making

I mean, I am a far left American, and I don't want far right extremists and nazis on here, but I haven't given anyone death threats.

Please. I would never make a death treat.

If I'm comin' after you, you ain't gettin' a warnin'.

He uses a lot of words but what I think he's trying to say is 'I'm not leaving Reddit because I'm an American neonazi and I like how things are going here'

[โ€“] rustyfish@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I have more of a feeling most people here are Deutsch. But then again, thatโ€™s probably an American speaking.

Also: In the last two years I didnโ€™t get a single death threat on Lemmy. On Reddit I sometimes got one a week. Almost always Nazis or cops wanting to fight me on the street, or SA me or something else they love to fantasise over. And then there was that one Indian guy who didnโ€™t like me calling him out on his Islamophobia.

Sooooooooooo I have to assume that part with the death threats is made up.

Sorry, have to lock post since it's attracting off-topic debate and personal attacks that break the rules.

[โ€“] Trilobyte@feddit.uk 4 points 4 days ago

That's funny, I deleted my Reddit account after I'd gotten sick of it.
