THE POLICE PROBLEM

3499 readers

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

So ICE now formally is the US SS. The presidents personal army, police force, secret police, border guard and prison management in one.

ICE has only existed since 2003.

Uhhhh......we can't

For now. If you're a white male/female with at least 2 generations of American citizenship. You'll be ok.

I'm thinking the next big leap? Gov looks at all social media for what political side you're on. Then you'll get thrown in camps. This is maybe year 4 of Trump or whatever comes after him in a rigged election. Maybe an "emergency" skip the elections this time thing.

[–] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Palantir is actively collecting a database of dissenting social media accounts

We are not safe and you are naive as fuck if you think we are.

No, the next big leap is transgender people being rounded up. Trans people have been saying this, myself (an Australian) included, since before the election. He's already made it difficult to impossible to leave the country if you're trans. Not only are trans people being denied passports in their chosen gender, but those people are being denied them in their gender assigned at birth too. They're ignoring court orders over it as well.

I’m not so sure. Don’t forget RFK appointed David Geier to “cure US the autism epidemic.”

David worked with his father, a doctor, on a supposed ‘cure’ for autism. They experimented on neighborhood autistic kids in their basement. Their hypothesis is that since autism has links to gender dysphoria, that hormones must be at fault. They began giving the children injections of Lupron, a hormone suppressant that can cause chemical castration over time.

They were both charged with endangering minors, David was charged with practicing medicine without a license, and his father’s medical license was revoked.

Fun fact: Autism Spectrum Disorder was rebranded from Asperger’s when the DSM-5 was updated in 2013. They decided to finally drop the name of Dr. Hans Asperger, the German scientist who experimented on ‘autistic psychopaths’ under Nazi guidance.

cis hetero *neurotypical white man/woman. I only fit the white category. The LGBT will be next to be rounded up into camps. Not sure if I should flee the country or just accept my fate.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Best case scenario is Trump fuelling and stealing all that money

[–] bradinutah@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 day ago

He kinda is. He's made deals with the companies that will get rich from the semi-legal human trafficking profits that this creates.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 45 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Dont engage the gestapo. That is the only way they can fight, through confrontation. Bullets, fists, crowd control.

Get a propane torch, you know for some light plumbing.

Always have an angle grinder, these things can cut steel, but are also useful for shaving down rusted iron bars and aluminum. Keep these separated for safety reasons.

Also, if you need something very bright and very hot, magnesium strips can be ignited by the above mentioned torch. Don't do this near that dust you made.

Seriously don't. That kind of reaction, depending on the amount, will melt through solid steel.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Also, never mix grape juice with yeast and sugar. If you put it in a warm place, it will make a light poison appear in the bottle.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It absolutely is, and the ramifications of the bill won't be fully understood until it's largely too late.

It will have to be challenged in the courts and hopefully held up until a new Congress is seated in '27 and a new President in '29.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

until a new Congress is seated in '27

So, you think Trump isn't going to have democratic candidates arrested and/or disqualified from running? It's one of the standard next steps for authoritarian leaders.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People said the same thing about W. Bush and the opposing side said the same thing about Obama. I'm cautiously optimistic.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago

Neither of them ignored court orders the way Trump has done. Neither of them tried to launch an insurrection when they lost an election the way Trump did on Jan 6th. Neither of them called up governors and tried to pressure them to "find a few votes" the way Trump did in Georgia.

[–] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 56 points 2 days ago

a new President in '29

We all hope.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 22 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Sure, there will be a new President. Vance will take the job in name with Trump as VP, but will sit back.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Trump is old as shit and loves McDonalds. It's a medical miracle that he hasn't died of a heart attack in his sleep already. He's not going to be here much longer regardless.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Assuming law still matters by then, he can't be VP. VP has to be eligible to be president.

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When was the last time the law mattered? It’s been rules for thee but not for me for decades now

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (4 children)

You mean centuries? From 1776? When all men were created equally? And just men. None of those pesky women! And obviously only full real men. None of those 3/5ths of a man! Legally speaking of coarse....

I would put /s, but it's not really sarcasm. More of a condemnation of our entire country which tries to project these ideas that we're some great country built on respectable principals.

Fact is, our country was a group of alcoholic degenerates, that founded our country by giving the middle finger to the king of England because the King came to collect taxes.

From there, they decided that Native American lives meant nothing, and brutally murdered them for land.

While all this was going on, they also placed an amazon overnight delivery order for some slaves shipped straight from Africa.

And somehow, someway, in all of this, the NEW government decided it needed to collect taxes. You know, the whole thing that prompted this whole thing to begin with. But now they were COLLECTING taxes. Not PAYING them!

Always has been rules for thee but not for me. Since day 1.

Why Vance and not Don Jr? Despots normally hand power down to their kids.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Not successfully. North Korea is a huge exception. Everywhere else, those kids don't last long.

ICE is now upgraded to:

Imperial Command Enforcers

[–] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure would be nice if people like you didn't meme the rise of fascism in America

[–] CXORA@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago

Sure would be nice if Americans didn't elect fascists to control the world's most powerful military. But here we are.

Fortunately most of this money will be stolen by federal contractors, but yeah, the gICEtappo is going to balloon in size.

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 2 days ago

That's the glimmer of hope here. You've got greed and inconpetence all dueling with malice.

Billions of dollars will be squandered on overpriced and inappropriate equipment, or laundered through consultancies that won't be providing proper training, setting the stage for some dramatic rake-in-the-face moments.

My bingo card includes:

  • An ICE branded armoured vehicle driven over their commanding officer, DUI optional.
  • Antivaxxed recruits getting Super Malaria trying to operate the camps.
  • Some dramatic security failure (maybe a domestic-terror plot) that even Biden's law-enforcement apparatus would have easily stopped except that all resources were focused on ICE.
[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 2 days ago

as if they arnt doing it already, they have A specialized airline solely for deportations.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

At the rate things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if most of that money will end up in the pockets of new American oligarchs.
