We've got an issue here. It won't let me see the post. I believe you, but is there an archive version of this?

Edit: Here is the original article: https://www.404media.co/ice-and-cbp-agents-are-scanning-peoples-faces-on-the-street-to-verify-citizenship/

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 51 points 1 day ago

Archive link since that's behind a paywall: https://archive.ph/C7jJu

Even China's facial recognition is wrong like 20-30% of the time

This is going to have so many false positives...

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 28 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This is going to have so many false positives…

That's the idea.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 16 points 19 hours ago

It’s the smartphone version of “I smelled marijuana,” bet there’s a setting to double tap a button and flag an offending person regardless of documentation.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (2 children)

And China doesn't have any black people, for whom facial rec is notoriously inaccurate.

Oh, yeah, false positives all over the place.

If you get ensnared by this little scheme, make the best of it. Keep track of everything that happens during your detainment, down to the slightest inconvenience, because you are going to blow that up when you get your case into a courtroom. Make these Sociopathic Oligarchs fund your (hopefully early) retirement.

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 points 31 minutes ago

The first line kinda ignores the minorities in China. It's mostly Han so the minorities suffer similar discrimination there due to lack of representation or excessive regional enforcement

Might wanna be careful with those genie wishes, in context.

Who would win?

An app connected to a server

1 itty bitty DDOS attack

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 points 30 minutes ago

Double tap to declare guilty and deport. Single tap to deport

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 8 points 17 hours ago

Error, couldn't reach server. Default judgment: guilty

[–] QuantumStorm@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

Is it time for LOIC to make a comeback?

[–] FE80@lemmy.world 16 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

This is analogous to drug sniffing dogs; the purpose isn't that the technique is valid, it's that is provides a plausible excuse for an action.

[–] reddit_sux@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

Life comes full circle Nazis did genocide to Jews so now Israeli are enabling Nazis, while carrying out genocide of their own.

[–] amos@mander.xyz 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I really really really hope that when this is all said and done, every single one of these people face consequences. And we all know what consequences the people want.

[–] AsyncTheYeen@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

Just like the Nazis!! Oh wait USA has pardon most of them, specially in Japan (They're still in power)

Exclusive: algorithm used by fascism app has been leaked!

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (4 children)

The wording of "alien" is pretty disturbing in and of itself. Not illegal or anything, not "foreign", but "alien". Might as well just say "unwanted".

[–] m4xie@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are a whole lot of aliens with citizenship. Both people that have naturalized and citizens born abroad to American parents.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Yup, just the word itself has a very strong connotation to something negative or dangerous, so I doubt it's by accident that they chose this word.

[–] m4xie@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Not at all an accident. And indicative of how they want to deport (or worse) legal aliens. And further, we've seen them deport many natural born American citizens from minority groups they are targeting.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 1 points 32 minutes ago

I'm just wondering, why hasn't a civil war already started against this?

And yet apps helping identify ICE agents are taken down.

I actually do not understand how some people find this unconcerning. This is like blatantly dangerous.

[–] naught@sh.itjust.works 75 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I'm just surprised that they didn't call the app Minority Report - I mean it's right there and so accurate

404 Media is journalist owned (there are four of them) and they’re doing some of the best journalism in the USA lately. I signed up about a year ago and don’t regret it. If you’ve got the extra cash and you actually give a damn about our broken media landscape, you could find a lot worse places to spend it.

[–] KingOfSleep@lemmy.ca 111 points 1 day ago

Fascism: there's an app for that!

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think it "overrides" proof of citizenship because of the numbers theyre told to deport. A "figure it out later, but get the deportation numbers now" scenario

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, in a way they're really just saying out loud the quiet part: that their job is to arrest people who "don't look right", quite independently of being an illegal immigrant, legal immigrant or even a citizen.

Having the "app" as an intermediary in the decision process is just a "computer says" way to isolate themselves from the responsabilities of what is in fact their choice (as the app was still configured/trained per their instructions so it's nothing but a computer agent dirctly or indirectly executing their instructions)

[–] Tja@programming.dev 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I can't believe nobody has noticed this in their rage boner, but this is double hearsay. Some dude said that he was told by other dude that this is going on.

I'm all for people fearing and even hating ICE, but this one smells funky.

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This is ice officials talking to journalists.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 1 points 3 hours ago

Ice official... So... a dude? Probably incompetent and misinformed at that.

Won't it be super FUN when we use our own App to find them all and bring them to court to face their trials and sentences? I'm staying in super good shape just because...

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's a reason why Google is banning sideloading... its not a coincidence

[–] janNatan@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago

It's because Apple is getting away with it, and they want to use their own play store to force you ads.

[–] hsr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 62 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Uhm excuse me is this app available in an official app store? Does this mean ICE SIDELOADED THEIR APP?

I want everyone to be speaking like this, so I will lead by example.

If they fucking try it, I will kill them. Then and there.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Doesn't mean a lot online, talking to a bunch of people who don't know you from Adam. Better to start speaking like this in person with your neighbors, preferably not in range of any recording devices. A single neighbor that knows that you're willing to raise up arms in their defense is worth more than any number of online strangers that you couldn't possibly help defend

On an unrelated note, the Second Amendment is not just for conservatives

Fucking excuse me? An app is supposed to override my goddamn birth certificate? Absolutely not. In fact, I’ll be damned if I let a cop scan my face without putting up a fight. I’m walking away unless detained, and if I’m detained, I’m not doing a fucking thing until I have my lawyer.

Edit: Look up and commit to memory the phone number of your local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, if you don’t already have an attorney’s contact information ready at hand.
